Macha - strong powdered green tea Though green tea is long associated with Japan, it is prepared from the leaves of the same plant that produces the black teas of China and India. The difference is that in Japan the tea leaves are steamed after picking. This destroys an enzyme present in the tea plant, and the leaf consequently stays green. It thus retains its natural vitamins and the potassium and phosphoric acid that it also contains. Sencha Green tea per 100gm Historically, green tea was associated with the Zen sect of Buddhism, and tea had been used by priests to keep awake during all night vigils. Legend has it that the priest, Daruma, unable to stay awake, tore off his offending eyelids. Cast aside, they took root and became the tea plant. In the popular mind, tea became associated with the Buddhist awakening called ‘satori’ and this became yet another reason for thinking well of Macha. At the time, Macha was the only form of tea Japan’s ecclesiastics and aristocracy knew. Curious to know why?
